Tudor Workshops
Teachers can ‘pick and mix’ different topics and activities which best suit their unit of work and individual class.
The different elements below can all be completed to give a flavour of Tudor Life or you can select certain elements to create a specific focus for your workshop.
- Different jobs available in and around the Tudor House (Night watchman, servant etc.)
Selected pupils get dressed into costumes and find out more about the process of getting the house ready for a ‘holy day’. Explanation of Tudor costumes can be extended to become more of a feature. - Tudor food and drink
An explanation of new foods available due to exploration at this time and the differences between the food of the rich and poor. - Superstition, medicine and religion
For example, marks on buildings, burial of charms and the increase in superstition. - Apprentices
Pupils are chosen to represent the different types of apprenticeships available in this period. Apprentices are used to demonstrate different duties and games that were popular (eg bowls, long bows and arrows). - Tudor Dancing
Learn the differences between dancing of the rich and that of the poor. Pupils practise different types of dancing and are taught how to curtsey/bow.
Victorian Life
Victorian workshops include themes such as: comparisons between the rich and poor, keeping clean, clothing, toys and games, education and Victorian Christmas traditions. You can select specific elements to study in more detail, if you prefer.

St Michael’s Church
Discover more about this most historical of churches – opposite Tudor House and Garden. St Michael’s church, the oldest building in Southampton, is believed to have been founded in 1070. Through over 900 years St Michael’s Church has been closely connected with the life of the Old Town.
Miraculously, it survived the bombing in World War 2 when all the other Southampton churches on medieval foundation were destroyed by enemy action. Raided by the French and Genoese in October 1338 – the church was damaged and had to be reconsecrated – there are burn marks on the walls possibly from these raids. It was these raids that led to the building of the medieval walls along the west side of the city. Inside is the tomb of Sir Richard Lyster, one of Tudor House’s owners. This tomb is an early example of the architectural tomb that became fashionable in Elizabethan and Jacobean times.
The church can be opened by arrangement for a free self-guided visit. One hour tours are charged at £40.00. Please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call 023 8091 7814 for more information or to book.
